Beginning of the Vacation of a Lifetime

Our Fall Break began with the end of walking class on Thursday morning. Denise was nice enough to let us walk back to our flats for our fitness walk so that we had plenty of time before we had to all leave to catch our flights, buses, trains, etc. Jeana and I headed out after a quick lunch to catch our Easybus. We found the stop without any problems and waited for the bus to arrive. It was of course late, which you sort of just have to expect with Easybus. We planned extra time into our departure in case it was late so we weren’t worried at all. As we were boarding the bus there were not enough seats for everyone. There was another bus coming but a lot of people were really upset as the original bus was already late. Jeana and I were fortunate to get on the bus. Two girls on our bus didn’t end up printing out their tickets so this made the other people who didn’t get on even more upset. The bus driver got really mad at them but he didn’t kick them off. If I was him I would have and let the other people with tickets on. This chaos ended up delaying us even more but finally we left for the airport!

We got to the airport, got our bag checked, and went through security without any problems. Security at the airport was extremely lax. Jeana was unfortunately randomly selected to be searched. Once we got through security we sat and waited for our gate to be opened up. We had about an hour to kill. When our gate opened up we headed there and boarded the plane not long after. On the plane I read my book and then tried to take a nap so that I would be all ready to go once we landed in Rome. Some people were being really loud on the plane though so it kept waking me up. Jeana sat by the window and while I had my eyes closed she saw that we passed over the Swiss Alps. I thought that was pretty cool…kind of bummed I slept through it!

Our plane landed at 8:20, 15 minutes ahead of schedule! We got our bag from the luggage claim and then I realized I had made a minor error in planning. I had information on how to get to our hostel from the metro but I never checked to see if there was a metro at the airport. There wasn’t so we had to figure out a way to get to the metro. It didn’t end up being a huge deal because we easily found the trains that took us to central Rome. Once we found the trains we didn’t know which one to take so we asked a lady at the desk. All she did was give us a ticket and said there you go. Luckily we figured out which train it was and got on board. When we got on I saw on the ticket that you could be fined if you didn’t verify it. Luckily there was a really nice lady sitting across from us who told us where to go to verify our ticket. We made it back on the train before it took off luckily.

The train took us to Termini station where we were able to connect to the metro. We figured out the metro system but it took us a while to find the actual train we needed to get on. We were sort of unsure if we were headed the right way and then the helpful lady from the train appeared and told us we were going the right way. It was really nice knowing we were headed in the right direction. After we got off the metro all we had to do was find our hostel. We were supposed to check in between 9:00 and 10:00 but I had called while we were on the train letting them know it was going to be later. After a struggle to find the place since it was dark out and street signs were not easy to locate we made it to our hostel at about 10:30. As we walked there we saw graffiti everywhere.

The guy at the hostel that checked us in was nice but he didn’t really seem to know what he was doing. We finally got into our room and then went out to dinner at the Pizzeria down the street. We split a Fungi (mushroom) pizza and brushetta and each got our own desert. Jeana got some orange chocolate cake and I got tiramisu. After dinner we went back to our hostel and I had a mini freak out as I realized some of my money was missing. Jeana and I searched everywhere for it but it was nowhere to be found. I tried to just put it out of my mind and focus on enjoying the rest of the trip. I went and emailed my parents to let them know I had arrived, read for a little bit and we went to bed around 1:00. I was out in an instant. Traveling sure makes you tired. We had left our flat at 1:00 so it was quite a day of traveling. Finally being in Italy was sort of surreal though. Our hard work of planning the trip was finally becoming a reality and we were excited to enjoy our vacation!
